So I was reading a totally random article in the Times and I read something that I had to share with the IAYM reading public.

The time it took David Lee to lift the Knicks over the Charlotte Bobcats with a tip-in Wednesday night was but a blip on a basketball clock. But a tenth of a second can seem like an eternity in other sports, and it can be enough time, too, for nature to put up some gaudy numbers.

Sports like luge, track and field, swimming and auto racing are timed to the hundredth or thousandth of a second, and even that does not always produce a clear-cut victor. In the world outside sports, a tenth of a second is enough time for a beam of light to cover nearly 19,000 miles or for a hummingbird to flap its wings 10 times.

“A tenth of a second is a real lot,” said Geoff Chester, the public affairs officer at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington. The observatory runs one of two atomic clocks in the United States; the clocks track time to better than a billionth of a second, or a nanosecond.

“A real lot”?  Is that, like, the technical term for it?

Worst/Best Holiday Special Ever December 21, 2006

So I have never heard about this Christmas Special because I was exactly 1 when it came out.  And because George Lucas sent out the storm troopers to keep this from surfacing.  But here is part one of the Star Wars Christmas Special.  Do yourself a favor and watch at least the credits.   Special guest star Bea Arthur, anyone?

Ho Ho Hubbard

“A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant,” Ben Brantley says, is “exactly what its title promises: an elementary-school-style entertainment, cast entirely with children, that explains the teachings of the Church of Scientology in the manner of a homespun Christmas pageant.” Based on the writings of L. Ron Hubbard – and his critics – the musical put the downtown theater troupe Les Frères Corbusier on the map when it was first performed in 2003. Its pint-size stars help balance out the adult irony, for a “sweet show with hidden fangs.” And there are TomKat hand puppets, of course.

7 p.m. tonight; various show times through Jan. 7, New York Theater Workshop, 4th Street Theater, 83 East Fourth Street (Bowery), East Village, (212) 239-6200; $32.
